As parts of the city rework houses to make them bigger some choose size and throw out design.

Houses to be homes need a mixture of good of design and utility. When design and utility are planned in accordance with each other, there are some give and take in both areas. However the over all use and feel of the house and home can be enhanced. Windows can be placed to service living areas according to sun and season, as well time of day usage.

Size as your main condition of choice removed many of possibilities of usage, comfort and visual pleasure can be lost. Toronto renos are famous for their  discount of visual pleasure. Good  design for either inside or the exterior of the house, it has great effect of the home feel if a house.

East York is an area of the city that is in a huge transformation of major size renovations in the city. The momentum is around the rebuild of post World War Two houses.

The area is awash with these rebuilds, usually 2 or 3 on the same street at the same time.

The choices of size over design are very evident, here are sme exterior photos highlight this happening,

The blog will do another post as the interiors come together to high size over design choices inside.

Gord Perks on the Scarborough Subway Extension decision today

“What we just saw today is that all the money is now going to the Scarborough Subway Extension. Because the cost went up so much, there’s nothing left for the light rail program that we were told was part of the original package,” added Coun. Gord Perks

Make it illegal for supermarkets to throw away good food

The #WhatAWaste Campaign:

Last year, France passed a new law forbidding supermarkets from throwing out and deliberately destroying food that can still be eaten. Instead, supermarkets must donate all unsold food products to local organizations.

According to the UN, nearly a THIRD of all food produced globally is wasted – that’s 1.2 billion tons of wasted food a year. North America wastes the most food, at almost 660 pounds per person per year. In Canada, while thousands of people struggle daily to feed their families and food banks desperately search for enough food to feed them, $31-billion worth of food is wasted every year.

In a world struggling with poverty and hunger, food waste is a disgrace.

This petition urges the Government of Canada to:

  • Bar supermarkets from throwing out and intentionally destroying unsold, still edible food
  • Require supermarkets to donate goods no longer fit for sale to charities or to farms for use as animal feed or compost
  • Require supermarkets to donate goods that have been wrongfully packaged or damaged, but that remain edible

We are well aware of the logistical and legal issues that critics of this petition may be quick to bring up. Our attitude is one of progress, positivity, and problem-solving: both the French and Italian governments have drafted legislation that successfully addresses a range of potential problems. We can use their legislation as a model, building and adapting their progress to suit the specific needs of Canadian food policy.

There are issues that need to be addressed when developing any new legislation. The ultimate fact driving this petition is that Canadians of all ages suffer from hunger on a daily basis. They deserve better. Addressing the absurd levels of waste in Canadian supermarkets is the first step to restructuring our national food policy and ensuring a smarter, more sustainable future for all Canadians.

In France, this new law all began with a petition that gained 200,000 signatures. Our goal is gain 100,000+ signatures and attract national media attention while developing concrete policy proposals and developing a pilot project. Once we have gained at least 100,000 signatures, we will have the platform to arrange a meeting with government representatives and push this petition on to federal policymakers.

Right now, we need your voice and your support. Please sign and share this petition to help us bring this law to Canada!

The Transportation Safety Board has announced it is opening an investigation into a runaway train incident earlier this month at CN Rail’s MacMillan Yard in Vaughan, in which 74 rail cars — one of them carrying dangerous goods — rolled away uncontrolled for five kilometres.
The TSB tells CBC News that on June 17 ground crews were using a remote control device known widely in the industry as a “belt pack” to assemble a train when the 72 loaded cars — as well as two empty ones — rolled away uncontrolled.
In a written statement released Tuesday afternoon, CN confirmed a runaway locomotive escaped its control and pulled the cars five kilometres down the track with a crew member stranded onboard. CN also revealed that the runaway cars included “a single dangerous goods load of an ethanol/gasoline mixture.” The company says it is co-operating with the TSB investigation.

731 Runnymede Rd Shelter, city amended report, main development the city will secure the site.

Somewhat different post here than normal.

The blog usually posts the entire text of important city council items.

This post will not do that, the amended item report contains the names of a large number of people who spoke at council or emailed a submission, in nine years of dong this blog, no other Junction item had this many submissions or people speaking at council about the item.

So in respect for these people privacy, the text of this item in not in this post. Google indexes this blog, quickly and routinely places the posts at the top of the search listings for Junction related city  posts, great most of the time.

Click here to see the amended report.
It will be considered by City Council on July 12, 2016.

Toronto Jazz Festival now on

The Toronto Jazz Festival is a jazz event in Toronto which takes place for 10 days in late June through early July. Unlike the Toronto Beaches Jazz Festival, most of the events are indoors and located throughout the downtown core. The hub of the festival is Nathan Phillips Square, with more than 40 other locations spread out all across the city.

Why no photos from the dinning tent and the stage front, well they are nothing bad boring. But as I was told it’s about the music, of course by the music techs.

Just cannot agree, no favor, nor mood, party, other experience creating elements have been laid in. UGH!

How the music & that musicians batter has been great.

Ends July 3rd, still worth it.

Parkdale Residents Association concerned about The Ex grounds, so glad they are making an effort on this deep problem.

A few mths ago I started a blog about the destruction of public use of the Exhibition Grounds. I never got around to finishing it, yes my bad, but I did get pictures.
And now the Parkdale Residents Association have put out some real good info on the situation,

All text below from

The Parkdale Residents Association (PRA) is very concerned about what is happening at the South end of Parkdale.
Exhibition Place (EP) is a City-owned regional amenity of extremely high public value, comprised of 192-acres in the core of one of North America’s largest cities.

As Toronto’s population continues to grow and the City becomes increasingly developed, Exhibition Place has the unparalleled potential to offer the residents of Parkdale, Liberty Village and all Toronto access to much-needed open green space.
But this potential is under threat.

Recent events indicate that, under the problematic direction of the Exhibition Place Board of Governors, the City is in grave danger of losing much of this valuable open green space amenity for future generations.
The case of MUZIK is a particularly egregious case-in point. Unbelievably, the Board has proposed an Official Plan Amendment (OPA) that would extend the lease period of MUZIK beyond the current 21-year limit to allow the lease to extend to 2034 (!).

The proposed means of extending the lease period is to *change the designation of the lands in the Westerly portion of Exhibition Place from ‘park/open space’ to ‘rejuvenation area’*—in other words, *to remove public open space in order that private businesses may benefit from public assets indefinitely into the future*.

Attend the once annual Exhibition Place Community Liaison Committee Meeting to have your interests and opinions heard.
